About the original book
Anna Sewell's only novel was first published in 1877. It is narrated by the horse himself, Black Beauty, who describes the kind and cruel owners he works for over his life.
Why it works for 11+ practice: Because the story is told from the horse's point of view, it is useful for practising questions about narrative viewpoint, feelings and the contrast between kindness and cruelty.
How to use it
- Read the storybook together or independently.
- Work through the study pack, looking back at the story to find evidence.
- Mark it with the answer guide and talk through any tricky questions.
- Use the 22-mark total to track progress across books.
Printing tip: print on A4 and choose "Actual size" or "100%", not "Fit to page", so the writing lines stay the right size.
